Hi, my name’s Damian
I’m a chemistry teacher and during lockdown, I was reading a lot of works from science history (I’m a nerd, unashamedly). Einstein, Newton, Darwin, Curie. All the big hitters.
After seeing the diagrams and equations that changed history I thought they would look really cool on a notebook cover. So I designed a chemistry one. For myself at first but then a few friends asked for one. Then a few people I’d never met. Then a dozen more. Then hundreds more. And now here we are!
My hope is that these notebooks and the works of history’s greatest scientists inspire you in your work as you build on the legacy of Einstein, Newton, Curie et al.
Your notes alongside those of the greats
We began Atoms to Astronauts because most science gifts and merch are a bit dull or uninspiring.
We wanted beautiful covers to reflect our love of science and show off the achievements of history’s greatest scientists.
So, we included extracts from the works of Newton, Curie, Einstein and more on our covers to inspire you as you build on their legacy.
A notebook is only as good as its paper
A notebook is only as good as its paper so we selected premium UK milled paper to give you the best possible writing experience.
You’ll notice how smooth the paper is and how your pens glide across the surface and your inks won’t bleed through so you can write notes on both sides of the page.
And our lay flat thread sewn binding allows your notebook to fall open so you can write at your desk, on your lap or anywhere else without having to hold the pages open.
Handmade in the UK
We partnered with a world-renowned bookbinder to produce notebooks befitting of the great scientists on the covers.
Handmade by a team of experts using techniques honed over generations our handmade notebooks are carefully constructed entirely in the UK.
Sustainability Materials & Practices
Our notebooks are made in the UK so only have to travel a few miles from our manufacturer to us.
This greatly reduces CO2 emissions compared to using overseas manufacturers.
Once you've opened your science parcel from us, you can place all the packaging in the recycle bins, including the tape (even the packing peanuts are compostable).
All our paper is FSC certified and recyclable (but these notebooks aren't for throwing away once finished!)
I've waited a few weeks to write this review to get a good idea of the quality. And I can honestly say that by some distance this is the best notebook I've ever used. The covers are beautiful and the paper is incredible. I've used gel pens mostly but it holds up nicely with a standard fountain pen. No bleed and minimal ghosting which is perfectly fine. I'll be back for more.
I bought the Neuroscience hardcover as a 40th birthday present because I love the notebooks so much. The birthday girl was enraptured with the cover, the 5mm dot grid (perfect, according to her) and loved that she can use her fountain pens in them. These books are my "go to" presents for all my nerdy/geeky friends now...
I love these notebooks. I've purchased these to use as my Lab notebooks, to record my neuroimaging and neurospectroscopy experiments, and make notes about the techniques we use in the lab. I also like the quality of the paper, allowing me to use fountain pens without any bleed through.
Beautiful notebook, exceptional quality and service. Touched by the handwritten thank you note too!
When I saw Damian's email about the new Neuroscience design, I loved it, and I ordered one immediately.
I had zero reservations, ordering it without a second's thought, for several reasons: First, I love the first one I bought; second, all my friends for whom I've bought (or to whom I've referred) various designs love them as well; third, the journals themselves are beautifully and meticulously made.
The designs are striking, detailed, and great to see lying on your desk; people almost always comment on how cool they look if I ever have it sitting out somewhere.
Regarding the journals' craftsmanship--that is ,the boards, binding, paper, ribbon, etc.--they are all fantastic; the paper is thick and creamy; it takes ink really well regardless of pen type (I've used fountain pens, gel rollers, and ballpoints so far). It's a joy to write in really.
Damian's customer service is top tier as well. They ship quickly from the UK to the US and Canada. And it's easy to see how much he pours into the craftsmanship, the product, and the business. I'll be buying Atomstoastronauts several more times, and I recommend them to all of my friends. Needless to say, don't hesitate to buy anything that catches your eye; it's well worth the money, and you'll not be disappointed!
